Hentges, who not surprisingly also occasionally writes for Ex-ACSH Prez, Hank Campbell at Science 2.0, tried to play down the risks of BPA by pointing out that there is a natural analogue of BPA known as BPF. Luckily, an astute reader, Paul Ernsberger of CWRU's School of Medicine pointed out that BPA is "far more lipophilic than BPF owing to the two methyl groups; BPA accumulates in adipose tissue but BPF is unlikely to --it will rapidly be lost in urine. Lipophilicity is also required for binding to mammalian sex hormone receptors, so BPF is likely to be safe." Better to post his comment before Hank deletes it!
